The main purpose is educational. We wanted to tell the story of the discovery and study of Pluto, as well as explain the causes and consequences of its reclassification. We touched upon the issue of the Solar System scale in this special project. In order to reveal this topic, we reached out for help to Konstantin Batygin, professor of the California Institute of Technology, Alan Stern, head of the New Horizons expedition, and Vladimir Surdin, associate professor at the Physics Faculty of Moscow State University. As a result, we consistently told the story of the study of Pluto, provided it with expert comments and illustrated our story with interactive elements.

Основная цель — образовательная. Мы хотели рассказать историю открытия, изучения Плутона, а также объяснить причины и последствия его понижения в статусе. Кроме того, в спецпроекте мы затронули вопросы реальных масштабов Солнечной системы (есть ли что-то за орбитой «разжалованных» планет) . В результате мы последовательно рассказали историю изучения Плутона, привели экспертные комментарии и проиллюстрировали нашу историю интерактивными схемами.

A multimedia educational longread about the discovery of Pluto and different reasons why its status was downgraded to that of a «dwarf planet». This special project, dedicated to the 90th anniversary of the discovery of the celestial body, is divided into four chapters. The first chapter outlines the backstory of what made astronomers look for the ninth planet, how and who discovered the space object, and why Pluto got such a name. The second chapter describes how Pluto «decreased» almost 500 times in half a century. The third section is dedicated to the debates about Pluto's «demotion», and the fourth tells about the search for a «Ninth Planet 2.0».

Some key features of this project are infographic diagrams and schemes. In particular, you can observe an interactive timeline of people's perceptions about the Solar System since the time of Claudius Ptolemy. Another infographic portrays the estimates of the diameter and the mass of Pluto over the past century — from the hypotheses of the initiator of the search for the ninth planet to the results of the study, which was conducted thanks to the New Horizons probe. In addition, you can study the 3D model of the device itself, which was launched to Pluto in 2006, and see a diagram with the real scale of the Solar System.

В частности, интерактивный таймлайн, с помощью которого можно увидеть, как менялись представления людей о Солнечной системе со времен Клавдия Птолемея и до наших дней, а также оценки диаметра и массы Плутона за последнее столетие — от гипотез инициатора поиска девятой планеты до результатов исследования зонда New Horizons. Кроме того, в материале можно изучить 3D-модель самого аппарата, который запустили к Плутону в 2006 году, и увидеть схему с реальными масштабами Солнечной системы.
